THE HISTORIC BANNER COLLECTION
Each year, during the summer before their graduation year, a group of prospective graduates gather at Alumni Hall to begin choosing their class motto, flower, color(s), and honoree. A large part of the discussion is given to the decisions regarding the class banner.
The first class banner was created in 1882. Each year since then, the banners have become true expressions of each class's personality. Often, the banners are also a reflection of what is happening in our nation's history at the time the class was formed. The banners are artistic expressions, made of different shapes, fabrics, colors, and embroidery materials.
Many of the banners are displayed throughout the lower rooms of Alumni Hall. They are on display all season long and we invite you to come in and view these historic pieces at your leisure.
Every year, during Recognition Week, many, many prayers and wishes are sent up for good weather as the classes dearly love to parade and march behind their banners on Recognition Day.
Charlotte Crittenden has managed the banner collection and the banner committee for a number of years. They continually battle with humidity and mold as they do their best to conserve and care for the banners year around. We sincerely appreciate their dedication and effort.
We would also like to acknowledge Helen Habenicht, the banner photographer. We thank her so much for her time, talents, and efforts in making sure our pages remain current.
